Introduction
The Gender and Faith Network (GFN) in Zimbabwe, comprising Christian Aid, Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) and Padare / Enkundleni / Men’s Forum on Gender (Padare) are working on a project that addresses Gender Based Violence in Zimbabwe (AGBVZ). The GFN intends to publish a training manual that specifically targets the Christian faith community in Zimbabwe. The manual is an integration of various approaches to gender training but with a firm theological grounding. The manual aims to address the high levels of GBV in a patriarchal society where 80% of men and women claim to belong to a faith group.
Background
The overall goal of the AGBVZ project is to contribute towards reduced levels of gender-based violence among women, girls, men and boys in targeted communities through the following set objectives: To strengthen and capacitate faith institutions’ response to gender inequality and gender-based violence in six districts of Manicaland; To contribute towards increased effective implementation of the Domestic Violence Act by policy makers, community leaders, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Anti domestic violence council, religious leaders, Traditional courts with the support of faith and community leaders; To strengthen the role of the church in the referral system of GBV cases in six districts of Manicaland.
The GFN realises the need to have a specific approach and tool for use in engaging faith leaders and the Christian faith community in Zimbabwe on GBV. The GFN has developed a proposed module framework to be used in training trainers and to facilitate dialogue with faith groups on gender and gender-based violence. The aim is to ensure that trained facilitators have the capacity to cascade gender training and advocacy work in their respective churches and communities.
Scope of the assignment
To ensure consistency, objectivity and quality control, the GFN seeks to engage an editor to finalise the training manual. The editor is expected to perform the following tasks: Review the draft training manual and compile it into a coherent publication which follows the basic rules of a participatory training and manual copy editing i.e. to be “clear, correct, concise, comprehensive and consistent”; Arrange the different draft Chapter sessions into clear titles and sub-titles in a logical manner. The chapters should be arranged so that they follow a meaningful logical and chronological order; Proof read the entire manual to eliminate factual, grammatical and spelling errors and style inconsistencies and check for clarity of thought and flow. Ensure that the language used is simple and user friendly for community level facilitators; Be proactive and search for additional information to enrich the manual and ensure that the content is factual, relevant and effective training approaches are used for each topic; Work closely with the GFN Consortium members to identify a suitable manual title; Ensure that the referencing (footnotes, endnotes or bibliography) are consistent with acceptable academic standards; Assess the importance and relevance of training session, points of information and annexes provided in the manual.
