Background

Brief background
The FAO Subregional Office for Southern Africa (SFS) has been undertaking a number of interventions in support of efforts of the governments in Southern Africa and Eritrea to promote sustainable agriculture production intensification of small scale farmers; monitoring and response to plant pests and diseases, routine agriculture and food security situation monitoring and reporting. Since last year, SFS has also been supporting the countries in the subregion to sustainably manage the Fall Armyworm (FAW) under the Framework Programme for the management of FAW in Africa in collaboration with several partners.
Duties and responsibilities
Working under the overall supervision of the FAO Subregional Coordinator for Southern Africa, the technical guidance of the Lead Technical Unit (AGPMG), and the direct supervision of SFS Plant Production and Protection Officer, the consultant will perform the following tasks: Facilitate the identification and deployment of technical expertise to support the various training events for the management of FAW in Southern Africa and Eritrea; Provide support in the planning, organization of the FAW response intervention activities in SFS; Contribute to resource mobilisation activities for plant production and protection interventions in Southern Africa; Provide technical support to the implementation of relevant activities in the SADC strategy for Pesticide Risk Reduction and the SADC Pesticides Regulators’ Forum (SAPReF) to contribute to strengthening pesticides management in the SADC region; Contribute technical expertise to the seeds programmes in the sub-region, working with the SADC seeds technical committee and support efforts for resource mobilisation, meetings, workshops and trainings; Support Climate Smart agriculture (CSA) interventions including Conservation Agriculture and other relevant agro-ecological approaches that promote Good Agricultural practices in the Subregion.
Minimum requirements
Advanced University degree in agriculture, agronomy or related field; At least 10 years relevant experience, preferably in agricultural/crop development programmes with a strong focus on capacity development using participatory extension approaches; Academic background and experience in plant protection; experience in Entomology will be an advantage; The consultant should demonstrate good writing skills as well as leadership and organisational experience, preferably leading multi-disciplinary teams; Ability to work with people of diverse cultural and national backgrounds; Ability to work in multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity

ADRA Zimbabwe seeks to recruit a highly qualified and experienced individual who will work with different stakeholders in the District to successfully implement project objectives. S/he will have wide practical experience dealing with farmers, policy makers and implementers for sustainability and to ensure compliance based on the DIP and as directed by the Project Coordinator.
Competencies and experience
Degree in Agriculture/Food Security & Nutrition/Livelihoods/ Agricultural Economics or equivalent OR relevant Diploma with 7 years' experience; Basic understanding of agricultural value chains, especially small grains, horticulture, Savings & Internal Lending Communities/ VLSA/ ISALs; High level people skills, ability to build relationships with ability to identify, communicate with stakeholders; Minimum of 3 years' experience in training farmers on improved agricultural technologies and supervision or management of farmer cooperatives and associations; Certification in agronomy and animal sciences will be an added advantage; A clean motorbike driving license will be an advantage; Ability to communicate in Ndebele is highly desirable.
